In late spring 2012, to encourage physical activity and counter obesity, we partnered with Hike the Heights, an annual community event and walk which links NYC residents to their parks in Northern Manhattan. Participants walked along a “giraffe path” connecting 7 parks and the surrounding neighborhoods, ending at a community party at the Sunken Playground in Highbridge Park in Washington Heights. Leading up to the event, Hike the Heights partners hosted giraffe making sessions (see a picture from the Center’s event below!) to line the paths and decorate the parks on the day of the event. The colorful giraffes, made from recycled materials, now proudly grace the main entrance of our lobby at the Center. The event received coverage by the Manhattan Times: http://manhattantimesnews.com/MAY-30-2012/hike-the-heights-8-soaring-spirits-return-to-the-sunken-playground.html. Download a copy here.
