Manuela Orjuela, MD

Manuela Orjuela, MD, ScM, focuses her research on gene-nutrient and gene-environment interactions during pregnancy and early childhood and the development of early carcinogentic changes in childhood cancer, with a principal focus on retinoblastoma. She has led a multidisciplinary team examining gene-nutrient and epigenetic risk factors for retinoblastoma in collaboration with investigators in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, including the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, the Hospital de Pediatria of the IMSS, the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica, the Instituto de Fisiologia Celular of the UNAM, the USDA laboratory on Aging at Tufts University, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the University of Toronto. As a member of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, Dr. Orjuela has led a collaboration with the Center, the laboratory of Cytogenetics at Columbia, and the Leukemia Research Laboratory of the UK Institute for Cancer Research, examining development of chromosomal aberrations and specific pre-leukemic genetic changes in the Center. Dr. Orjuela is the academic track director for the Global Health Track in Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School and has a joint appointment in the Division of Pediatric Oncology at Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons.
